A colleague asked me to write my thoughts. But what exactly is there to say? Ten years ago, when Michelin first arrived in Shanghai, I wrote critically about how rushed it felt. Looking back now, perhaps there was never a perfect point of entry.<div \/><div \/><\/p>\n<p>From a broader perspective, this is clearly an expansion.<\/p>\n<p>From a more objective standpoint, this is a relatively healthy development. Over ten years\u2014within limited resources, and with a pandemic in between\u2014this was never going to be simple. <div \/><div \/>But when we shift the focus back to the restaurants themselves, the questions become more direct.<\/p>\n<p>For the entire Jiangsu\u2013Zhejiang\u2013Shanghai region, one slightly disappointing reality remains: <div \/><div \/>There is still only one three-star restaurant.\u00a0Since Ultraviolet closed, no new three-star has emerged. Why is it that the highest\u00a0recognition for Chinese cuisine appears in Beijing? <div \/><div \/>If Michelin operates under a unified standard, then at the very least, this raises questions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3463 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tastytrip.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/xrjbj.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1056\" height=\"1328\" \/>(Beijing) Xin Rong Ji's Interior\u00a0&amp; Dish @michelinguide<\/p>\n<p>Looking at the two-star level, there are some developments that feel reassuring. <div \/><div \/>Amazing Chinese Cuisine (Jingxi Hui) moving up to two stars reflects solid strength. Its menu design\u2014especially the two-person set menu\u2014is impressive, and I would go out of my way to dine there again. At the same time, from Tou Zao to T\u2019ang Court, this group of two-star restaurants gives the impression that Michelin still leans toward Cantonese cuisine. <div \/><div \/>T\u2019ang Court\u2019s return is no small feat. From three stars, through years of decline, and now back to two. During the broadcast, Chef Su spoke candidly about the difficult years and how things are gradually improving. It was a sincere and moving moment. A dramatic arc \u2014 fall, and then a return to recognition.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3463 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tastytrip.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/td.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1056\" height=\"1328\" \/>Tou Zao's Interior\u00a0&amp; Dish @michelinguide<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3463 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tastytrip.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/tg.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1056\" height=\"1328\" \/>T'ang Court's Interior\u00a0&amp; Dish @michelinguide<\/p>\n<p>The new one-star entries carry a different kind of meaning. <div \/><div \/>Vivant has become one of the most popular fine dining French restaurants in Shanghai.\u00a0Johnny Pham's integration of Vietnamese influences into the menu is something worth watching. Given its reputation and long-standing presence, this feels like a matter of time. <div \/><div \/>At the same time, Jin Sha not receiving two stars has become one of the biggest omissions in many people\u2019s eyes.<\/p>\n<p>In common perception, Jie Xiang Lou, Ru Yuan, and Jin Sha operate at a similar level, each with its own strengths. Within Suzhou, it stands out clearly. Instead, it received one star. <div \/><div \/>That was unexpected. <div \/><div \/>But from another perspective, it also says something important: <div \/><div \/>Michelin is not simply \u201cgiving face\u201d\u2014it maintains its own standards. <div \/><div \/>That, in itself, is admirable. <div \/><div \/>For Xin Rong Ji, the result feels almost like a \u201creality check.\u201d But given its consistency as a legendary restaurant, a return to two stars next year would not be difficult.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3463 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tastytrip.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/xrj.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1056\" height=\"1328\" \/>Xin Rong Ji (Jiaojiang)'s\u00a0\u00a0Interior &amp; Dish @michelinguide<\/p>\n<p>On a recent revisit, I did notice that more effort has gone into menu structure and overall consistency. At the same time, the seafood display area seems to have lost some of its former vitality and warmth\u2014a slight loss. <div \/><div \/>That said, in terms of execution, it remains very strong. <div \/><div \/>A \u201cstable one star\u201d is not entirely unexpected.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"\u5c0d\u8a71\u4e2d\u570b \u4e2d\u9910\u7c73\u5176\u6797\u661f\u4e4b\u6700\u65b0\u69ae\u8a18 \u5275\u8fa6\u4eba\u5f35\u52c7\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/k2PJnGj_QKY?start=550&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center; margin-top: 4px; margin-bottom: 20px;\">Xin Rong JI (Taizhou) @Jocelyn\u534e\u59d0\u7684TastyTrip<\/div>\n<p>Looking ahead, I hope Michelin continues to discover more independent restaurants. <div \/><div \/>Compared to focusing on large, group-backed establishments, this direction feels more meaningful for the broader dining ecosystem.<div \/><div \/>As for \u201clocalization,\u201d it is certainly necessary\u2014but it should not be the only standard..<div \/><div \/>Every award has its own personality. For Michelin, what matters is maintaining its own criteria for what defines a great restaurant.<\/p>\n<p>In this year\u2019s list, we see some restaurants rising from setbacks, while others receive a wake-up call. <div \/><div \/>It also highlights the value of independent awards within the system. <div \/>&lt;div\/Ultimately, if there is one expectation going forward, it is this: <div \/>&lt;div\/Michelin should further define its own identity, rather than being influenced by other commercial awards.<\/p>\n<p>In today\u2019s dining world, a system where inspectors pay for their meals, and restaurants are not required to spend on PR or marketing to be included is extremely rare. <div \/><div \/>In fact, this may be Michelin\u2019s greatest strength. What was once perceived as a highly commercial award now feels, in comparison, relatively clean.  <div \/><div \/>If one had to describe it, perhaps it is something like  <div \/><div \/>:a rare case of remaining untainted\u2014\u201crising unstained from the mud.\u201d (laughs)<\/p>\n<p>Placed within the context of ten years, this is something we can understand\u2014and something that was never
